— ‘The Mothers’ by Jenny Saville

A fabulous collection of new works by Jenny Saville is currently being exhibited at the Gagosian Gallery in New York until October 22.

Saville, born in Cambridge in 1970, is best known for her outsized oil paintings of traumatic female bodies, and this is Saville’s first exhibition, ‘Continuum’, devoted exclusively to drawing, with a new theme energized by her experience of motherhood.

Saville portrays the intimate relationship between mother and child in a series of life-sized drawings directly inspired by Renaissance nativity portraits — in particular Leonardo da Vinci’s cartoon The Virgin and Child with St. Anne and John the Baptist, an atypical scene in which the Virgin contends with a lively Christ-child.
