— The Ziegfeld Follies

These portraits capturing the theatrical side of 1920s fashion are of performers from the Ziegfeld Follies – a series of theatrical productions on Broadway in New York that ran from 1907 through 1931. New York’s version of a variety show was inspired by the Folies Bergère in Paris, that long-running entertainment venue where Manet painted his famous portrait of a bar girl, and – much like the Parisian version – staged performances for many of the era’s top performers.

These portraits are of Muriel Finley, Helen Henderson, Peggy Shannon, Adrienne Ames, Alice Wilkie, and Dorothy Wegman.
