To help drum up sales in the lead up to Valentine’s Day, the always-controversial retailer American Apparel have added pubic hair to the underwear mannequins in one of their New York City store windows. Located on East Houston Street, the window display has caused people to stop in their track to examine further, evening pulling out their cameras or smartphones to snap a quick picture.
According to an sales assistant in the store, the mannequins convey the “rawness and realness of sexuality”, and have resulted in a lot of attention from the media. This isn’t the first time American Apparel have used pubic hair as a shock tactic – they also released a t-shirt featuring an image of a hairy menstruating vagina last Autumn/Winter, which caused somewhat of a stir. Prior to that they also released a print ad with a model in sheer underwear revealing her pubic hair.
