Guatape is a small town of northern Colombia that has a very unique landmark. It’s home to a rather large rock, and this rock attracts scores of visitors each year because once you get to the very top of this rock, the views you get of the countryside are priceless.

The Rock of Guatape (El Peñón de Guatapé) has an elevation of 2,135 metres and provides steps for visitors to climb – all 659 of them. Back in 1954 when stairs weren’t in place, it took three men five whole days to get to the top of this enormous granite dome, and since then a small area on the top has been dedicated for visitors to collect postcards and souvenirs.

If you can stomach the height, once on top of the rock, you’ll be blown away by the views below.
