— Mexico Kitsch

Blok Design in Toronto have created this brightly coloured book documenting the aesthetics of Mexican Kitsch. I love the boldness of photography and typography.

México kitsch is a celebration of that singular aesthetic that in Mexico has found its truest calling. The book is a riot of colour, shape and texture, interspersed with quotes from some of the country’s most respected artist, writers and thinkers. We needed to honour the intent of our subject without falling into the trap of becoming kitsch ourselves. To that end, we re-purposed its vocabulary in a more contemporary manner, thus ensuring that the design wouldn’t compete with the content.
